Adventist Health is a faith‐based, nonprofit, integrated health system serving more than 75 communities in California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington. Here in Mendocino County, we have Adventist Health Ukiah Valley (AHUV) and Adventist Health Howard Memorial (AHHM). These two hospitals are a core part of Mendocino County’s quality of life.

Adventist Health Ukiah Valley is a 78-bed hospital in Ukiah and is designated as a level IV trauma center. AHUV has a physician on duty 24-hours a day and treats more than 25,000 ER patients, performs more than 5,000 surgical procedures, delivers nearly 850 babies, and performs more than 43,000 radiology tests every year.

Adventist Health Howard Memorial is a new, state of the art facility which with four surgery suites, a farm-to-fork restaurant and 25 private rooms.  AHHM has 24-hour emergency care, intensive care, surgery, an orthopedic joint center, diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, respiratory care, outpatient rehabilitation and a retail pharmacy. Adjacent to the medical center is a multispecialty medical office that includes primary care and other specialty care.

We’re proud to have Adventist on board as a sponsor of Startup Mendocino and we caught up with Jason Wells, the president of both Adventist Health Howard Memorial and Adventist Health Ukiah Valley, to hear about what he thinks about growth in Mendocino County.

What part does your organization play in the economic development of Mendocino County?

As one of the largest employers in Mendocino County, we are constantly hiring new community members into good paying jobs. We play a significant role in the overall economic development in the county, because when people stay local for their healthcare, that money flows into the creation of hundreds of jobs. Our employees, in turn, help local businesses when they spend here in the County. As well, one of the major deciding factors for new families and professionals who are thinking of moving into our community is whether there is access to good healthcare. All of these factors strengthen our communities here.

What good things do you see happening in the next decade in Mendocino County?

Mendocino County has tremendous potential for growth as people continue to move north to escape the congestion of the cities to the south. As we develop local services that traditionally we had to leave the county to get, we will see new levels of development that previously we've not experienced. As our population ages, we will see more of a need for healthcare services and providing access to care, right here at home, will be critical to the growth of our community.

What's your favorite place to be, eat or visit in Mendocino County?

My favorite place to eat in Mendocino County is Stone and Embers in Philo. Our family love the stone fired pizzas and the exceptional salads. We always eat outside by the fountain in the beautiful courtyard.
