Description:
Employee terminations are never easy, regardless of the reason for termination. Human resources and managers need to work together to ensure performance expectations have been communicated and any disciplinary process your company requires is followed. Terminating an employee without going through the proper disciplinary steps or without considering relevant employment laws puts your company at risk of being sued.
Mismanaged terminations can result in severe repercussions, including legal liability, damaged company reputation, and diminished employee morale.
Many termination decisions are complex and may involve state or federal leave laws, such as the FMLA. Additionally, the employee could belong to a protected class or a FEHA/ADA accommodation is not working effectively.
This webinar will cover the following topics:
- Types of terminations – voluntary, involuntary (layoffs, at-will)
- How and when to document performance issues
- The importance of following your company’s discipline policy
- The termination decision – what to consider
- Preparing termination documentation
- Unemployment – how to respond to claims
