The past 18 months has been exhausting for everyone and the future is still uncertain. So what has this meant for small businesses? At West Center, we found this thoughtful article by Zayna Syed published on the CalMatters.org website on July 14, 2021.

COVID-19 recovery efforts are finally underway — now, most anyone 12 or older who wants a vaccine can get one, businesses and office spaces are slowly starting to open up and schools plan a return to in-person classes. But many small businesses in California are still dealing with the devastating effects of the pandemic.

As we are all aware, water in Mendocino County – in fact, the entire state — is in critically short supply due to a lack of snow and rain these past few winters. West Center knows that having water is essential for small businesses to continue to operate. We did some research and found the following article, written by Megan Erwin for PG&E and adapted for length, with some water conservation tips every business should implement immediately.

Client Survey Findings

https://www.westcenter.org/2021-5-26-client-survey-findings/

West Center recently sent a survey to our clients. We wanted to know how our local small businesses have fared over the past (long) 14 months and to see how they view the future.

The majority of our respondents were in the retail field, followed by professional services and the arts. We’re happy that no one reported a business as permanently closed. Ninety percent of businesses are either fully or partially open and just nine percent reported a temporary closure that is still ongoing.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, to Central American parents. Growing up in a very large and diverse environment has been instrumental in my career over the last 18 years. I began volunteering as a teenager in 1992 at a homeless shelter and knew this was my path, to help people. I have been privileged to have worked with victims of abuse, mental health, homelessness, addiction, etc. Since moving to Fort Bragg in 2015, I have advocated for underserved populations and am eager to put my skills towards a whole new craft.
